Lamar Houston Moree, Sr., 86, of Albany, formerly of Ashburn, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at his home.
Lamar was born on July 1, 1926 in Worth County, Georgia, to the late Iverson Harden Moree and Gladys Ione Houston Moree.
He attended public schools in Worth County. Lamar served in the army during World War II in the Philippines, Okinawa and China. After his military service he attended Auburn University where he graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1950.
Dr. Moree practiced veterinary medicine in Turner and Worth counties for 47 years. In addition to his private practice he was a consultant veterinarian in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia for the swine, dairy and cattle industry.
Lamar served as president of the Turner County Chamber of Commerce for two terms. He served as Post Commander of The American Legion Post of Turner County. He was on the Board of Directors of both the Citizen Bank in Ashburn and the Sylvester Banking Company in Sylvester. He was actively involved in business and community development in the area. Lamar was voted Citizen of the Year in Turner County in 1969.
Lamar was a member of First Baptist Church of Ashburn, Georgia, and Sherwood Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia.
Lamar is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sara Ann Denham Moree, and their three children: Dr. Lamar (Chip) Moree, Jr. (Jennifer), Anna Wynn (James), Matt Moree (Lisa), 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. His brother, Jack Moree, preceded him in death.
Among his accomplishments in life, Lamar's love for his wife, family, and God were his greatest achievements. He was known as "Pop" by his grandchildren, who fondly remember trips to the flea market, late-night card games, and walks on the golf course together. Although he will be greatly missed, Lamar's family shares in his joy of meeting his Savior face to face.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 11:00 AM in Rose Hill Cemetary, 966 North Street, Ashburn, Georgia.
