Hubert M. Ponder, 92, of 418 East College Avenue, Ashburn, passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Tift Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
The son of the late George Calep and Winnie Lyda Kendrick Ponder, he was a retired farmer. Mr. Ponder was a member of the Georgia Farm Bureau and was a former director of The Soil Conservation Service. In 1967 he was named Georgia Farmer of the Year. He was also a member of the Ashburn First United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Lee Ponder and George Carlton "Bud" Ponder.
Mr. Ponder is survived by his wife, Dorothy Echols Ponder of Ashburn; sons, George (Margaret) Ponder of TIfton and John W. Sherrer, Jr. of Vienna; daughter, Freda (Jim) Cook of Fayetteville; sister, Ms. Annie Ruth Hopkins of Ashburn; Grandchildren, Alexandria Ponder of Athens, Lori Cook of Buford, Julie (Daniel) Adams of Griffin, John Walter (Dana) Sherrer III of Vienna and Savannah Sherrer of Vienna; Great-Grandchildren, Abigail Adams of Griffin and Emma Sherrer of Vienna.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 20, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Ashburn First United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Ashburn. The family will greet friends beginning at 5:30 until 7:00 PM Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the funeral home.
