George M. "Papa George" Johnston, 94, of Ashburn, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Tift Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.
Born on February 7, 1923 to the late John Fielder and Lois Rachel Armentrout Johnston, he was a life-long member of the Ashburn First United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served his country during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Johnston of Ashburn; son, Chris (Anita) Johnston of Moultrie; daughters, Sara George Nelson of Ashburn and Grace Gilpin of Augusta; step-children, Joseph A. (Tresa) Etheridge of Pinehurst and Janet D. (Scott) Moe of Cochran; sixteen grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, February 10, 2017 at the Ashburn First United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends beginning at 1:00 PM until the hour of services at the church.
While flowers will be accepted, anyone that wishes to do so may make memorial donations to the Ashburn First United Methodist Church.
