Herbert Russell (Bussey) Coker, 84, of Sycamore died Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Tift Regional Medical Center.

Affectionately known as Bussey, he was born on October 18, 1932 at the Bussey Home in Sycamore to the late Cone Edward and Ruth Bussey Coker. He graduated from Sycamore High School in 1952 marking the first class to graduate having went to school for 12 years. He served his country with great honor in the United States Army. He obtained the rank of Staff Sgt. and was stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky with the Headquarters Company, 3rd Armored Division. After his time in the Army, Bussey was the Postmaster of Sycamore for 28 years and was the Fire Chief in Sycamore for 40 years. He was Scout Master of Troop 36 for 25 years and earned the Silver Beaver Award. He served on the Turner County Board of Education for 12 years, on the Turner County Board of Commissioners for 4 years and the Sycamore City Council for 8 years and served as the municipal court judge. He was a member of the Masons of Sycamore Lodge 210 for 64 years and the Turner County Shrine Club for 64 years and served in every office capacity. He was a member of the Hasan Temple for 54 years. Bussey was a member of the American Legion for 67 years and held almost every office. As a member of Sycamore Methodist Church he was Chairman of the Board for 20 years, served on the Parsonage Committee and Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery fund as well as various other committees at Sycamore Methodist Church.

On June 26, 1955 he married the love of his life, Dorothy Elizabeth Ireland at Dakota Baptist Church. Bussey loved his Savior, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Lewis Coker, Eunice Coker Rainey, Hazel Coker Wells, Roy Coker, Mary Lee Coker Armstrong, Wesley Coker, Jane Coker Wheeler, Florence (Tid) Coker Christian and Gordon Coker.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Ireland Coker of Sycamore; sons, Randy (Eva) Coker of San Diego, California, Alan Coker of Sycamore and Mike (April) Coker of Thomasville; grandchildren, Jacqueline (Jonathon) of Sycamore, Russell Coker of Tifton, Micheal Coker of Thomasville, Clara Grace Coker of Athens and Christiananna Coker of Ashburn; great-grandchildren, Laura Evans and Ethan Evans of Sycamore.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, May 14, 2017 in The Ashburn First United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
