Russell Smith, Sr., 89, of Ashburn passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at his residence.
Mr. Smith was born on March 14, 1928 to the late Gordon Milton and Annie Searcy Smith in Turner County, Georgia. He served as an ordained deacon of the Baptist Faith for many years and was a member of The Ashburn First Baptist Church. He also served as the Turner County Farm Bureau President 23 years and served on several state committees. He was the Soil Conservation District Supervisor for many years and served as the President of the Turner County Livestock Association. Mr. Smith was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Smith was a retired farmer. His first shotgun was purchased for him by his loving wife, Peggy.
He is survived by his wife of over 66 years, Peggy Lanneau Smith of Sycamore; children, Rusty (Mary) Smith of Candler, North Carolina, Beth (Bob) Blanton of Sycamore and Brett Franklin Smith of Georgia; sister, Loraine (Ben) Wilson of Warner Robins; grandchildren, Sarah Smith, Dain Smith, Logan Smith and Andy Smith. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Molly Smith and Coleman Smith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Avery.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, May 26, 2017 at Perry Funeral Chapel with interment to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
