John Grady Mathis, 66, of Cordele passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at Crisp Regional Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Grady was born on July 29, 1951 to the late David Lamar, Sr. and Betty Jo Sutton Mathis. He was a master carpenter. Grady, along with his dad and brother, Lamar, worked together for many years as Mathis Brothers Construction. Grady was known to have a great sense of humor and always had a smile on his face. He was affectionately known as Papa to his grandchildren. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Vietnam War. He was also a member of Wenona Baptist Church in Cordele.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Karen V. Mathis of Cordele; daughter, Becky Crissman of Cordele; sons, Brian (Donna) Crissman of Cordele and David (Suzi) Mathis of Ashburn; sisters, JoAnne (Barry) Birdsall of Cordele and Laura Lynn (Bob) Bragg of Vienna; brother, David Lamar Mathis, Jr. of Cordele; sister-in-law, Karen J. Mathis of Cordele; grandchildren, Christopher Cole, Megan Crissman, Liam Mathis, Pax Mathis and Fitz Mathis, Elizabeth Thomas and Katherine Thomas. He is also survived by a host nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David T. Mathis.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, July 30, 2018 at The Ashburn First Baptist Church with private interment to follow at Red Oak Cemetery in Worth County. The family will greet friends beginning at 12:30 PM until the hour of services at the funeral home.
