Funeral services for B.F. “Ben” Whiddon, age 90, 760 Ben Whiddon Rd., Ashburn will be held Saturday, March 18, 2006 at 3:00 P.M. at the Ashburn First Baptist Church with burial to follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Ashburn. Mr. Whiddon died Thursday at Tift Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Whiddon was born in Turner County, Ga. and was the son ot the late Preston D. and Lillie Reece Willis Whiddon. He was preceded in death by his Step Mother, Mary Lou Lawson Whiddon. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Ashburn First Baptist Church.
Mr. Whiddon served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Tank Driver in the 81st Tank Battalion. He was in the Normandy, Holland, Belgium, Luxemburg, Holland, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Northern France campaigns. He drove his tank into Germany as far as the Elbe River. He was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver Star.
Mr. Whiddon is survived by his wife, Hester Griffin Whiddon, Ashburn, his children, R.F. “Buddy” & June Whiddon, Ashburn, Randall & Elaine Whiddon of Ashburn and Benita & Ronald Faircloth of Tifton. Also surviving are six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Friday at Perry Funeral Chapel.
