Funeral services for Marie Pitts Mitchell, 85, of Ashburn will be held Friday, February 9, 2007 at 2:00P.M. at the Ashburn First United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Ashburn. Mrs. Mitchell died Monday at her residence following a brief illness.

Mrs. Mitchell was born in Milan, Ga. and had resided in Ashburn since 1956. She was the daughter of the late Robert Perry Pitts, Sr. and Lona Oliver Pitts. She was a member of the Ashburn First United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Griffin-Saxon Sunday school Class and the United Methodist Women. She retired from the Turner County Board of Education after teaching from 1956-1963. She later retired as the Curriculum Director for the Turner County School System. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the Georgia Teachers College in Statesboro. She later received her Masters in Education and her Education Specialist’s from the University of Georgia. She was a former PAGE Field Representative and a former member of the Board of Directors of First South Bank.

Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert “Bob” P. and Teresa Mitchell, Ashburn, Ga. ; her grandchildren, Mary Margaret M. (Todd) Fincher, Orange, Calif., Anne Catherine M. (Mitch) Raines, Cordele, Ga., and Robert Patrick Mitchell, Ashburn, Ga. Also surviving is one great grandchild, Sara Ruth Raines, Cordele, Ga. Mrs. Mitchell was anxiously awaiting the birth of her great granddaughter Mary Catherine Raines in late February. Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Perry Pitts, Jr., Oliver Jackson Pitts, and her sisters, Margaret Sue Dickens and Jane Pitts Jarman.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Perry Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, you may make donations to the Ashburn First United Methodist Church or United Hospice of Cordele.
