Funeral services for Donald Raymond West, Sr., age 76, 810 Westwoods Ave., Ashburn will be held Friday, April 6, 2007 at 3:00 P.M. at the Ashburn First Baptist Church with burial to follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. West died Wednesday in Valdosta following an unexpected sudden illness.
Mr. West was born in Turner County and was the son of the late John Raymond and Fannie Mae Bearden West. He was the retired owner and operator of West Brothers Grocery in Ashburn and Rebecca and Plaza Restaurant in Ashburn. He was a former Ashburn city councilman as well as former mayor pro-tem. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a member of the Ashburn First Baptist Church. His interests included hunting, fishing, tending his cows and spending time with his family.
Mr. West is survived by his wife of 51 years, Faye Smith West, Ashburn, one son, Ray (Vicki) West, Jr., two daughters Teresa W. (Jimmy) Pylant, Ashburn, and Donna W. (Tom) Boyd, Ashburn. Also surviving are one brother, Ronald West, Ashburn, and one sister, Bivian Haggerty, Akin, S.C. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jeremy Boyd, West Griffin, Ricky Stallings, Jonathan (Elizabeth) Stallings, Cory Pylant, Luci Harrell, Casey Griffin, Joshua (Jen) Boyd, Krista Pylant, Jenna (Chris) White, Kristen Stallings, Emily West, and two great-grandchildren, Liam Boyd and Samantha White.
Mr. West was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, William Terry West, and two sisters, Jimmie Johnson and Edna West.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Perry Funeral Chapel.
