Funeral services for Mr. O. H. “Fess” Rhodes, 88, of Sycamore, GA. will be held Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Bethel Baptist Church in Turner Co. with the Rev. Larry Dean and Rev. Jimmy Cargle officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Rhodes passed away Wednesday at Tift Regional Medical Center.
Alan McAlister, Richard Shepherd, Willis Collins, Alan Arnold, Allen Whitehead and Wendell Lupo will serve as pallbearers. The former students of his who earned the American Farmer Degree in Vocational Agriculture will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Ollie Rhodes, he was born on February 8, 1920 in Taylor Co., GA. He was retired from the Turner County School System as vocational agriculture teacher and Vocational Education Supervisor.
Mr. Rhodes received many honors over the years for his outstanding work with students in Vocational Education. His most outstanding honor was being inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame as a charter member in 2000.
Mr. Rhodes, a World War II veteran, he received his Bachelor of Science, Master and Education Specialist degrees from the University of Georgia. He was a member of State and National Education Associations, the American Legion, the Exchange Club and was of the Methodist faith. He enjoyed golf and working with his pecan trees.
Survivors include his wife, Ernestine Hudgins Rhodes of Sycamore; his son and daughter in law, Jim and Susan Rhodes of Albany, GA., a granddaughter, Rebecca Rhodes of Valdosta, GA; his sisters, Edith Snead of Rock Hill, SC and Sara Lentymer of Columbus, GA.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from six until eight at Perry Funeral Chapel.
